The history of Viscosa Culture Factory, located in Kõrgessaare on Hiiumaa, is colourful. The name “Viscosa” comes from the founders’ dream of producing artificial silk — viscose — and selling it to the wider world. Only a trial batch of silk was ever produced before war broke out, times changed, and ownership passed through different hands.
1952. In 1952, the fish factory moved into the premises and until 2006, the famous preserves “Tallinn Kilns” were produced here. In the meantime, the factory remained quiet again until 2021, when a new reason was born to bring these walls back to life.
Throughout its history – from a viscose factory to a fishing industry, and now as a cultural factory – Viscosa has been bringing people together, now simply through creative objectives.
Now Viscosa is a meeting place where you can experience the time-independent joy of being together and the sensuality of the theatre, art, music, flavours and island tranquillity offered by this beautiful corner of Hiiumaa.
On 20 June 2026, we will inaugurate the renovated cultural factory, or Viscosa 2.0, at the Suvesumin day festival. The renovated factory will feature a theatre hall, galleries, a restaurant, a hotel, a co-working office, a creative lab and a host of new and exciting discoveries for first-time visitors and old friends alike. Viscosa is a fluid state of mind, or as they say in foreign language , a work in progress, which is gradually being filled in and is waiting for you to be part of its story.
Viscosa creates experiences — offering intertainment rather than entertainment.
TRAVELLING THROUGH TIME AND TALES
Come and enjoy culture while exploring Estonia’s unique industrial heritage. But you don’t have to remain just an observer – the Viscosa guided tour invites your group to dive into the factory’s layered world of vibrant history and bold visions for the future.
We’ll take you on a walk around the factory grounds, introduce you to the Steam House, the gallery Cathedral, Beacon of Culture, and the rest of Viscosa, sharing colorful stories and secrets from the past as well as exciting plans for what’s ahead.
The guided tour lasts 60 minutes and costs €120 per group.
IMMERSE YOURSELF TO VISCOSA TIME
When you step off the ferry or plane, it’s the perfect moment to reset your clock to local time and shake off the city life. In Hiiumaa, life flows slower and calmer than you’re used to. The smallest unit of time isn’t a second but half a day — that’s why in Hiiumaa, you only need to look at the clock twice a day (if at all).
Instead of hours, the numbers on the clock point you towards experiences and places waiting to be discovered. At 11 o’clock you’ll find Viscosa – the ideal landing spot, perfectly placed for setting out to every corner of the island.
And don’t worry if you can’t experience it all in one visit – we’ll always be here to welcome you back.

With a contribution of €5000, you’ll get 134 gift cards to Viscosa events (total value of €4020). Bring your employees, partners, or community members and take part in preserving cultural heritage.
As an artist-in-residence at Viscosa, you create value for our guests, partners, and team by gifting us a work of art made on site. In this way, you become part of the Viscosa artists’ community.
Thank you for being with us!

The Utoopia nr 9 Foundation, together with its partners, is implementing the project “Viscosa Cultural Factory – Phase I (creative entrepreneurship and cultural factory)”, co-financed under the measure “Attractive Regional Business and Living Environment”. Within the project, we are developing a culture and creative industries centre at Viscosa Cultural Factory — a place and working environment for (creative) entrepreneurs, young people interested in entrepreneurship, cultural organisations, and visitors.
The project will establish a theatre and conference hall, exhibition areas, fully equipped workshops, residencies, a HUB / remote-working spaces, a hotel, and a restaurant. A year-round programme will include a wide range of events, networking activities, and a business accelerator. The total project budget and the eligible costs amount to €3,329,138.03. The grant rate is up to 75% of the eligible project costs, with a maximum grant amount of €2,496,853.52. The minimum co-financing is 25%, totalling €832,284.51. This public–private partnership project has a county-wide impact in stimulating entrepreneurship.
