EXHIBITION “BALTIC NEW PAINTING”
OK. SMS. WI-FI
AT VISCOSA GALLERY · 20 JUNE – 31 OCTOBER 2026
150 ARTISTS FROM ESTONIA, LATVIA AND LITHUANIA
Here, painting is deliberately slow and physical — colour, material, and the presence of the artist’s hand take centre stage again. “Baltic New Painting” explores the role of painting in today’s screen-based world, and how young artists use surface and colour to reflect on identity, emotion, space, and history.
“Baltic New Painting” arrives at the Viscosa Factory Gallery in the summer of 2026 as a fresh, multi-voiced encounter with painting. Bringing together 150 artists from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania aged up to 40, the exhibition offers a snapshot of how a new generation uses, shifts, and redefines painting in an era where the visual landscape is fast, digital, and saturated.
The exhibition subtitle, “OK. SMS. WI-FI.”, grew out of a simple observation: these words are spelled exactly the same in Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian—like a small shared code that connects the Baltic space across language borders.
The group show reveals a dialogue between young artists from three neighbouring countries, where intimate stories meet broader historical and cultural landscapes. You can sense both the boldness and doubts of youth, freedom and restlessness—and how traditional forms find new breath for the questions of our time.
The exhibition does not aim to define a single “new Baltic painting”, but to open up a layered picture of how today’s young painters understand the medium: tradition and innovation are not opposites, but exist side by side, supporting one another both visually and conceptually.
“Baltic New Painting” marks a fresh layer in the Baltic painting scene—a kind of shared ground that holds courage, freedom and the desire to create something entirely new, while also making space for restlessness, uncertainty, influences, and multiple rounds of repainting.
